The College Town

Tomorrow's New York Times travel section profiles Hanover and the wonders (and popularity) of its small town environment.

With houses averaging $500k, how can Dartmouth afford not to develop some of its vacant land as retirement cottages and second homes? Why not line the obscure fringes of the golf course with $1.5m houses?

Wonderfully one sided article.

Ask Ms. Ross of Norwich, profiled therein, about the half mile plus rush hour backup she faces every day to cross the Ledyard bridge and climb the grade into town.

Alternatively, she could move into Hanover itself, where the solution to every problem is to spend more money. Forget the high median house price. How about a median property tax exceeding $10K.

It may be great for wealthy retirees, but how about the pressures on those stiffs still with children at home, that face so much pressure to send them to elite universities that 50-60 of the kids are caught in a high school cheating scandal. The NYTimes article did not mention the criminal accessory to theft charges being filed against the lead nine. Hanover has much to offer, but it ain't heaven.

When you complain about median property taxes exceeding $10k please don't forget that NH has no state income tax. Money to run the state has to come from somewhere.

If one is a retiree living in NH, you fall into one of two categories:

Retired gov't employees on a pension pay no income tax.

People who worked and saved from jobs in private industry, and take their retirement income from dividends, pay a flat 5% income tax on all of it, with no deductions (like the high property taxes) as done on income taxes in other states.

The same local Democrats who fought Bush's reduction of tax rates on dividends have fought against the NH dividend tax. Go figure.

Why does "the money have to come from somewhere"? Why not just lower the Hanover/Grafton county expenses? Are shiny new vehicles really needed for the town's parking gestapo?
